Relaxy Saturday Happenings: A Random Mix of Life

After kitchen renovating for the best two months, and deck building, and cleaning, and organizing.... J and I couldn't WAIT for this weekend to roll around. Before the party last week (I will post that eventually.... maybe), we decided that this weekend would be relaxing. We called today "Relaxy Saturday" and promised there would be no installing sinks or finishing the last two railings on the deck stairs. No waking up at 7 am, going to Dunkin Donuts to get coffee and getting to work (you can't make your own coffee when you have no kitchen). No making 100 trips to home depot.

And it's been the best Saturday in awhile. This morning we had some coffee and breakfast, and walked outside to find some cute little red surprises growing in our garden. Garden = side of our house that has magical soil where we just stick plants in the ground and they grow.
There has to be this netting over our little plants so that the animals don't get them.... And then we got some sweet little treats!
Home grown Walls strawberries. Maybe they can save the fact that today I also baked a cake. Umm, bakers of the world, you will cringe at this. This morning I pulled out a cake mix for carrot cake that we've had awhile but was rediscovered during project: actually organize kitchen. I realized I had no eggs, so J and I took a trip to wawa (oh what was that about making our own coffee? yeah, we didn't this morning despite a functional kitchen, we went to wawa. don't judge). I got eggs. A dozen. Now, we don't eat eggs. Sometimes those fake egg beaters, but not eggs. I mean never. I can't remember the last time we actually consumed eggs in egg form. And clearly I don't bake a lot. So we bring the eggs home, Jamie puts them in the fridge... and after baking the cake, here is the container of eggs.
Oops. I forgot to put eggs in the cake. A nice cholesterol free dessert if you will.... So I figured, the cake is not going to turn out well.... I better find something to fix it. In comes eggs' friend, icing.

I take the cake out and it's flat. Unsure if this can be fixed, I let it cool.... on our verrrrry fashionable hot plate that has our engagement picture on it. (thanks laurie)
After icing the cake, I decided to give it to the food taster extraordinaire in my home... aka Jamie. I mean J will eat almost anything, but he is also honest about it. Now, he might say "eh, it's okay" and proceed to eat the entire pan anyway.... but he'd tell me the truth. So I sliced somehow mangled a piece up in the process and shimmied it onto a plate.

Lesson #1 Learned. Cake does not really stick together well... or rise well... or function well... when you don't use eggs. Use eggs next time.  Then, I took it to the critic.
 Tasting.....
That's a smile. It was preceded with "mmmm". So, Lesson #2. It might not look pretty, or rise well, but I guess it tastes good. And cream cheese icing on top never hurts the cause.

Today should be named "do whatever I want" Saturday instead of relaxy saturday, if we are going to be honest. Because I also put away my new pots and pans that have been waiting for a new kitchen to be their home and took out my big Kitchen Aid mixer. They make me smile. I also have been trying to re-use the party decor to make our kitchen look cute, summery, and welcoming. So I took a few pictures...

Those pottery barn lanterns I ordered forever ago with wedding gift cards are so versatile. I move them all the time. And our house is full of flowers right now, which I adore. Let me tell you something else I adore:

My new oven. It has a smaller section on the top for things like cakes and pizza. And who are we kidding? All I ever bake is cakes and pizza. I guess sometimes I bake fish, but that can fit up here too. Unless I'm cooking a 13 lb turkey for thanksgiving, the bottom part doesn't need to be used. Which saves electricity, and money. I'm a big thumbs-up fan of both things.

Tonight we are headed to the Philadelphia Union game. We have season tickets and I never turn down a chance to go to a game. For a number of reasons. Sons of Ben are hilarious and good fans and are not toooo disrespectful. Plus, they do random stuff like this that cracks me up: Burn Chicago Fire, Enjoy the Rapture. I totally forgot it's the end of the world tonight. Well, at least I'll get to enjoy my other reasons for loving Union games before I go...Beer & hot dogs. My cute Union t-shirt. The extreme athletes (read: attractive men)
 Like Sheanon Williams:
Or Danny Califf:
Danny Califf was also in some philly magazine shoot. He has his kids names tatooed on his chest. How nice.

Let's note I cannot find any other men on the Union that are in an appropriate age range to say they are attractive. There are 19 year olds on this team. And a 16 year old. Can you imagine being a pro soccer player at 16?

Oh, we also sat down and watched a full movie today. We watched No Strings Attached. It was actually a great movie. Because it is totally marketed as a romantic comedy, but has a weird single male humorous side to it (not quite the Hangover ridiculous, but still funny) We actually both liked it. Shocking.

Anyway, here are the lessons learned in this post, just in case you need a recap and didn't read the 8 million words I wrote.
1. Have yourself your own relaxy Saturday.
2. Grow your own fruit. It's cheap and delicious.
3. Bake your cake with eggs, or use a lot of icing.
4. Feed said cake to your husband, who is not picky about food.
"You eat like a baby dinosaur, I mean, do you even chew?"
5. Buy an oven with an upper and lower section. It rocks.
6. Decorate your house with party decor leftovers instead of tossing flowers and candles in the trash.
7. Agree to go to sporting events with your hubby. You'll get hot dogs, beer, fries, and maybe even a few attractive humans to stare at during the 2 hour game.

Happy Relaxy Do What I Want Saturday!!!
